The Devious Means - Other Animals
Best Christian rock album ever! Their other EP's, Presenting the Devious Means and Songs We Are All Singing, are also great. Those two are less explicitly Christian and have a cool indie pop sound.
The Followers - Wounded Healer
This mix of musicians, including the guy from Blitzen Trapper, make a really cool classic rock/gospel soul sound. Much better than the first Followers album.
Josh Garrels - Love, War & the Sea In Between
It's hard to pick the best Josh Garrels album. There's also Home, Jacaranda, Over Oceans, and Lost Animals. It's a singer/songwriter style with lush instrumentation and the occasional rap.
The Sing Team - Oh! Great is Our God!
Really joyful group-style indie worship music. They have a fantastic new album of covers called Sing On.
The Oh Hello's - Through the Deep Dark Valley
This, their self-titled EP, and Dear Wormwood are some thoughtful and rousing acoustic/folk type music.
The Welcome Wagon - Welcome to the Welcome Wagon
Cutesy, quirky indie stuff. Pretty influenced by Sufjan Stevens. Their follow up album is Precious Remedies Against Satan's Devices. New album Light Up the Stairs.
Branches - Thou Art the Dream
Folksy, indie, pop, catchy fun. There are two other EPs and their new album is White Flag.
The Eagle Rock Gospel Singers
Some foot-stomping and soulful gospel music. Great to sing along! They have 3 EPs and Heavenly Fire and the new No Glory.
Ellie Holcomb - As Sure as the Sun
Excellent songwriting with a more mainstream sound, but nothing to roll your eyes at like a lot of stuff on the radio. Also check out her acoustic EPs, With You Now and Magnolia. I don't really dig her new album Red Sea Road yet.
Mike Mains and the Branches - Home
Power-chord-driven alt rock with a singer who sounds like the guy from Modest Mouse. A lot of energy and interesting lyrics. Their catchier follow-up album is Calm Down Everything is Fine.
Jetty Rae - Drowning in Grain
Some great indie pop from a woman with a strong, unique voice.
Team Callahan - Afterglow
Some really chill lo-fi retro rock. Great stuff.
Ravenhill - Soul
Kind of a messy, southern thing going on with some rockin' guitar work and shout along music.
Pacific Gold - Sing My Welcome Home
Of all the bands that do re-workings of hymns, this is the only one that doesn't sound like a band doing re-workings of hymns. Partly because they choose pretty obscure ones. They remind me a bit of Fleet Foxes.
Brothers of the Empty Tomb - What is Man
There are a lot of Christians resurrecting old music styles, and here's a really fun one that's more of a soul/R&B.
The Likes of Us - Roots and Wings
A folksy indie duet with some pep and soul.
Here's some more good music, just usually not at the top of my list.
- The Gospel Whiskey Runners - Second album even better than the first!
- The Autumn Film
- Ghost Ship
- Jon Foreman - His seasons albums have some great songs.
- Page CXVI - Re-Hymns - This remix of their updated hymn music is their best.
- Rend Collective - Campfire - Foot-stomping acoustic party worship.
- Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans - Hipster indie stuff. Good.
- Citizens and Saints - Join the Triumph - This catchy, retro sound livens up worship music.
- Heath McNeese - The Weight of Glory - An album based on the works of CS Lewis? Cool!
- Tow'rs
I'd also like to pay respects to some of the music I loved in former days. It may not be the best anymore, but it's still fun and the nostalgia is strong.
